My Approach to Cat Nutrition: The Best Diet for a Healthy, Thriving Cat
Cats are obligate carnivores, meaning their bodies are designed to thrive on a diet rich in animal protein and moisture. In the wild, cats get most of their hydration from their prey, not from drinking water. That’s why choosing a diet that mimics their natural eating habits is essential for long-term health, preventing common issues like kidney disease, urinary tract infections, and bladder stones.
Best Diet: Raw Feeding
My first choice is a species-appropriate raw diet. Raw feeding provides the highest-quality nutrition, ensuring cats get bioavailable protein, natural enzymes, and the moisture they need to stay hydrated. A properly balanced raw diet supports:
• Lean muscle development and a healthy weight
• A soft, shiny coat
• Reduced risk of allergies and digestive issues
• Improved dental health, as chewing raw meat and bones helps keep teeth clean
Raw feeding does require research to ensure proper nutrient balance, including taurine, calcium, and essential fatty acids. But for those who can commit, it’s one of the best ways to promote overall feline health.
Second Choice: High-Protein, Hydrating Wet Food
If raw feeding isn’t an option, the next best choice is high-quality canned food with a high moisture content. Wet food closely resembles a cat’s natural diet and helps keep them hydrated while providing essential nutrients. I prefer brands like Tiki Cat, which use real, whole meat without unnecessary fillers like grains, soy, or artificial additives.
Dry Food: A Supplemental Option
While I prefer raw or wet food as a primary diet, I do free-feed with Tiki Cat kibble throughout the day as a supplemental option. Many dry foods on the market are packed with carbohydrates and fillers that cats don’t need, leading to obesity and long-term health problems. That’s why I’m very selective about kibble, only choosing high-protein, grain-free options that align as closely as possible with a carnivore diet.
Why Hydration Matters
Cats naturally have a low thirst drive, meaning they often don’t drink enough water to stay fully hydrated. Many cats prefer running water, as it mimics fresh, moving streams in nature. Using a cat water fountain can encourage them to drink more and stay properly hydrated. Stainless steel or ceramic fountains are great options, as they are easy to clean and help keep water fresh.
Final Thoughts
Choosing the right diet for your cat is one of the most important decisions you can make for their long-term well-being. Whether you go raw, high-quality wet, or a combination of both, focusing on high-protein, moisture-rich, species-appropriate food will help your cat live a longer, healthier, and happier life.
